Hi, I’m Billy Styles, Founding Partner and President of Organic Plant Health.  Welcome to our website and what we believe will become an incredible source of information related to improving soil health and growing organically.  Our company was founded on the concept of offering residential and commercial customers a variety of organic, natural and environmentally responsible products.  We provide liquid and granular fertilizers for the healthy growth of ornamental trees, majestic trees, shrubs, turf grass, vegetable gardens and flower gardens. Wherever plants of any kind are growing Organic Plant Health wants to be there to help them grow better by improving the soil in which they grow and by addressing the nutritional needs of the entire plant.

The first thing we have to admit before starting any new landscape care program is that if we’re not feeding the soil, we’re not feeding the whole plant.  Most readily available products today focus primarily on the top growth of the plant with little regard to the part of the plant below the soil.  This has never made much sense to me.  It’s like building a 20-story building on top of some card-board boxes – it may look great for a little while but sooner or later it’s going to decline and collapse under the stress of the poor foundation.  Plants are the same way.  If you plant them in soil that is lifeless and heavily compacted, then fertilize to push surge top growth, the plant will eventually decline and collapse because the root system couldn’t properly establish and provide that solid foundation that all plants need. Promoting healthy soil is the most important step towards creating a healthy landscape and it’s the step most individuals and companies completely SKIP.  If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, a healthy soil is the foundation of all plant health.

Most of the products we carry at Organic Plant Health contain a large variety of components to provide for complete plant health.  Our products include seasonal appropriate amounts of natural sources of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, the three macronutrients that all plants need to sustain life. Our products also contain a variety of beneficial bacteria that work tirelessly to increase soil porosity and suppress soil borne diseases.  In addition most of our products contain endo- and ectomycorrhizae, which are naturally occurring fungi that form a symbiotic relationship with plant roots.  The plant provides the fungi with necessary carbohydrates, while the fungi sends out tendrils (long root-like strands) that stretch far outside the root zone to bring back water and nutrients for the plant. Both of these are incredibly important when establishing a new plant or when reviving an existing plant. A living, breathing soil supports a healthy and active soil food web, which allows roots to fully develop and to form the very strong foundation that every plant needs to survive.  This is the same process, whether we’re talking about a small flat of Pansy’s or a giant Oak tree.  A healthy soil promotes improved air/water/nutrient exchange, deeper roots and more efficient nutrient uptake by the plant.  This is what healthy plants are all about.  Once you have achieved this healthy foundation, it’s much easier to promote healthy top growth, as well as greater bloom and fruit production.

Curiosity about plants - their growth patterns, life cycles and factors that affect overall health - has been the driving force behind my journey over the past 45 years.  From my early days riding on the back of a tractor on the family farm to building several successful businesses focused on improving soil and plant health, the desire to further expand my knowledge has fueled my personal and professional growth.  As I follow my curiosity it continues to lead me to new discoveries that, no doubt, will enable me and the staff at OPH to better serve our customers by providing better products and better protocols that will help improve the health of our soil, our plants and ultimately, our environment.
